What Personal Data We Collect and Why

Comments

When you leave a comment on our site, we collect the information you enter in the comments form, your IP address, and browser details to help detect spam.

If you use an email address to comment, we might send it through the Gravatar service to check if you are using it. If your comment is approved, your profile picture will show up next to your comment. You can read Gravatar’s privacy policy here.

Media

If you upload images to the site, make sure they don’t include embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors can extract this data from images on our website.

Cookies

If you comment on our site, you can choose to save your name, email, and website in cookies. This makes it easier for you to comment again without re-entering your information. These cookies last for one year.

If you log in, we set a temporary cookie to check if your browser accepts cookies. It doesn’t hold personal data and is removed when you close your browser.

We also use cookies to save your login info and screen preferences. Login cookies last for two days and screen option cookies for a year. If you choose “Remember Me,” your login will last for two weeks. Login cookies are removed when you log out.

If you edit or publish an article, a cookie is saved in your browser showing the post ID of the article you edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content from other websites. This content acts just like if you visited the other site.

These sites might collect data about you, use cookies, embed extra third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, especially if you have an account and are logged in to that site.

How Long We Retain Your Data

Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely. This helps us recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically.

If you register on our site, we also store the personal information in your user profile. You can see, edit, or delete your personal information at any time (username cannot be changed). Site administrators can also view and edit this information.

Your Rights Over Your Data

If you have an account or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you. You can also ask us to delete any personal data we have about you. This doesn’t include data we must keep for administrative, legal, or security reasons.

Where We Send Your Data

Visitor comments may be checked by an automated spam detection service.
